Nostalgic 1960s variety show with colorful animal characters could appeal to retro TV fans.
About This Theme
The Banana Splits is a live-action television series that originally aired from 1968 to 1970, featuring four anthropomorphic animal characters named Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper, and Snorky who formed a fictional rock band. Produced by Hanna-Barbera, the show became a staple of Saturday morning children's programming and introduced the memorable theme song "The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana)." The series blended comedy sketches, live action segments, and animated cartoons in a variety show format that captured the psychedelic aesthetic of the late 1960s. The franchise has maintained cultural relevance through reruns, DVD releases, and a 2019 horror film reimagining, cementing its place in television history as a beloved example of classic children's entertainment from that era.
Discussion of a Banana Splits pinball machine has emerged within the pinball community as enthusiasts compile wish lists of potential future themes. The property appears in conversations alongside other nostalgic television properties and represents the broader trend of pinball manufacturers looking to classic entertainment franchises for machine themes. Community mentions describe the desire for a machine featuring the four main characters, with one enthusiast specifically calling out "Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snorky. Tra-la-la" as elements they would want to see incorporated into gameplay.
A Banana Splits pinball machine would offer strong visual and gameplay opportunities rooted in the show's distinctive aesthetic. The colorful character designs of the four band members could translate into animated toys or mechanical features on the playfield, while the variety show format could support multiple game modes representing different segments from the original series. The instantly recognizable theme song provides an obvious audio hook, with potential for incorporating other musical elements and sound effects from the show. The bright, pop-art visual style of the 1960s source material would allow for an eye-catching cabinet design that stands out on a game room floor, while the band concept could support music-based gameplay mechanics such as completing songs or hitting specific note combinations for scoring bonuses.
