About This Theme
Clash of the Titans pinball machine is a frequently requested theme among pinball enthusiasts, drawing on the enduring appeal of both the 1981 fantasy film and its 2010 remake. The original film, featuring stop-motion effects by Ray Harryhausen and starring Laurence Olivier and Harry Hamlin, follows the Greek hero Perseus on his quest to save Princess Andromeda from various mythological creatures including Medusa and the Kraken. The franchise gained renewed cultural relevance with the 2010 remake and 2012 sequel, introducing the mythology to contemporary audiences. While not among the most frequently mentioned pinball themes in online discussions, Clash of the Titans appears regularly in community wishlists and speculation threads, with pinball fans drawn particularly to the 1981 version for its nostalgic value and distinctive visual aesthetic.
Pinball community discussions about Clash of the Titans emphasize the theme's natural compatibility with pinball gameplay mechanics. Enthusiasts specifically highlight the quest-based structure of Perseus's journey, which would translate effectively into mission-based objectives, collectible items, and progressive wizard modes culminating in a battle with the Kraken. The mechanical owl Bubo from the 1981 film has been repeatedly mentioned as an ideal candidate for a pinball toy or mechanism. The franchise offers rich opportunities for visual design, from the classical Greek architecture and mythological creatures to opportunities for dramatic lighting effects during encounters with Medusa or the underworld sequences. The mythological monster theme provides multiple targets and modes, with each creature defeat serving as a natural gameplay milestone, while the dramatic orchestral score and iconic line "Release the Kraken" offer strong audio hooks that would resonate on a playfield.
