About This Theme
The Jumanji franchise, which began with Chris Van Allsburg's 1981 children's book and expanded into a multi-film series starting with the 1995 movie starring Robin Williams, has emerged as a topic of discussion among pinball enthusiasts seeking new licensed themes. The original film told the story of a magical board game that brings jungle dangers into the real world, while the successful reboot films starting in 2017 reimagined the concept as a video game that transports players into a dangerous jungle adventure. With a cultural footprint spanning nearly three decades and multiple generations of fans, Jumanji has maintained relevance through its recent box office success with Dwayne Johnson and Jack Black, making it an attractive intellectual property for potential pinball adaptation. The franchise currently holds significant recognition within the gaming and entertainment landscape, and pinball community discussions have noted its potential across pinball forums and enthusiast sites.
Pinball fans have identified Jumanji as a natural fit for the medium, with community members describing it as a theme that "just makes too much sense" and noting that a virtual Jumanji pinball table already exists, raising questions about whether a physical machine might follow. The franchise appears on lists compiled by enthusiasts examining high-grossing media properties that have not yet received pinball treatment, where it stands out among notable absent licenses. Discussions have touched on whether the original 1995 film or the recent remakes would provide better source material, with some fans noting the video game era aesthetic of the newer films might offer additional design possibilities.
A Jumanji pinball machine would offer rich design opportunities across multiple dimensions. The visual theme could incorporate lush jungle environments, dangerous wildlife including rhinos, elephants, lions, and crocodiles, ancient temple ruins, and the iconic game board itself, whether in classic wooden form or as a glowing video game console. Gameplay mechanics could center around completing game levels or surviving rounds, with multiballs representing animal stampedes, trapped ball features echoing players being stuck in the game, and progressive objectives mimicking the journey from one game space to another. The franchise offers extensive audio possibilities, from tribal drum beats and jungle ambience to memorable film quotes and character callouts, particularly from the charismatic cast of the recent films. The fantastical nature of the property, combined with family-friendly appeal and action-packed sequences, provides the kind of varied, exciting content that translates effectively to pinball playfield design.
