About This Theme
Kang and Kodos are a pair of recurring alien antagonists from The Simpsons, the long-running animated television series that premiered on Fox in 1989. The characters first appeared in the show's first Treehouse of Horror special in 1990 and have since become fixtures of the annual Halloween anthology episodes, which began airing under the Treehouse of Horror banner in 1992. Depicted as tentacled, one-eyed extraterrestrials from the planet Rigel VII, Kang and Kodos are known for their sardonic humor, their repeated failed attempts to conquer or deceive the human race, and their parodic commentary on science fiction tropes and American politics. Their cultural footprint extends well beyond their limited screen time, as they have appeared in Simpsons video games, merchandise, theme park attractions, and remain among the most recognizable secondary characters in the franchise's decades-long run.
Within the pinball enthusiast community, particularly on forums such as Pinside, Kang and Kodos have generated recurring discussion as a potential theme for a dedicated pinball machine. Community members have floated proposed titles including Kang and Kodos Invade the Earth, Kang and Kodos Destroy the Universe, and broader concepts tied to the Treehouse of Horror anthology format, with some suggesting there is enough source material to support multiple machines. The enthusiasm reflects a broader desire among collectors for horror-adjacent and comedic science fiction themes, and several forum contributors have expressed that a machine built around these characters or the Treehouse of Horror segments would be an immediate purchase. Licensing complexities surrounding The Simpsons are frequently noted as the primary obstacle, given the franchise's corporate ownership and the historically difficult terms associated with its intellectual property rights.
A Kang and Kodos pinball machine would offer considerable creative opportunity across visual design, mechanical gameplay, and audio. The characters' flying saucer imagery, tentacled silhouettes, and green-toned alien aesthetic lend themselves naturally to a backglass and playfield filled with cosmic horror-comedy iconography, with potential toys or sculpts depicting the aliens themselves, their spacecraft, or recognizable Springfield landmarks being abducted or destroyed. Gameplay modes could be structured around memorable Treehouse of Horror scenarios, such as a board-with-a-nail-in-it mode referencing a specific episode gag, an invasion multiball sequence, or a presidential election parody mode drawn from the characters' political appearances. The sound package would have access to decades of memorable voice performances from Harry Shearer and Dan Castellaneta, along with the show's existing library of comedic alien sound effects and Danny Elfman's iconic Simpsons theme, all of which would give the machine a strong and immediately recognizable audio identity.
