About This Theme
Succession is an American television drama series that aired on HBO from 2018 to 2023, created by Jesse Armstrong. The show follows the Roy family, owners of the global media and entertainment conglomerate Waystar Royco, as they navigate internal power struggles, corporate intrigue, and dysfunctional family dynamics. Over its four-season run, Succession became a critical phenomenon, earning numerous Emmy Awards and establishing itself as a defining prestige drama of its era. The series is known for its sharp writing, complex characters, and biting satire of wealth and power, with particular praise for performances by Brian Cox as patriarch Logan Roy and the ensemble cast including Jeremy Strong, Sarah Snook, and Kieran Culkin. The show's cultural impact extended beyond television, influencing discussions about corporate governance, family dynamics, and media consolidation.
Within pinball communities, Succession has emerged as an occasional topic of discussion among enthusiasts speculating about potential future themes. While mentions remain relatively limited, fans have noted the show's strong appeal for its memorable dialogue and character moments, with one community member specifically highlighting the potential for distinctive callouts and gameplay possibilities. The series concluded in 2023, and its critical acclaim combined with its devoted fanbase has led some pinball collectors to consider it as a theme with untapped potential, though such discussions remain largely speculative at this stage.
A Succession pinball machine would offer several compelling design opportunities that align well with pinball mechanics. The show's corporate boardroom battles and family power struggles could translate into competitive multiball modes representing different Roy family members vying for control, while the series' global settings from New York to Scotland could provide varied visual themes across the playfield. The iconic opening theme music by Nicholas Britell, with its classical-influenced score, would provide a sophisticated audio backdrop distinct from typical action or music-themed machines. Character callouts, particularly Brian Cox's commanding delivery as Logan Roy with lines like "You're my number one boy," could create memorable moments during gameplay. The show's emphasis on deal-making, betrayals, and corporate maneuvering could inspire mission-based objectives where players navigate alliance-building and backstabbing mechanics, potentially using a stock ticker display or board meeting bash toy as central playfield features. The luxury aesthetic of private jets, yachts, and corporate offices would allow for premium cabinet artwork that captures the show's distinctive visual style.
