About This Theme
The Flash pinball machine has been discussed within the pinball community as a potential future theme based on the DC Comics superhero franchise. The Flash character first appeared in 1940 and has remained a cornerstone of DC Comics mythology, with multiple iterations including Barry Allen and Wally West taking on the mantle of the Scarlet Speedster. The franchise has maintained cultural relevance through various adaptations, including a television series that ran from 2014 to 2023 on The CW network and a 2023 theatrical film. The character's central conceit revolves around super speed and access to the Speed Force, an extradimensional energy source that grants The Flash the ability to move at velocities exceeding the speed of light, travel through time, and phase through solid objects.
Discussion of The Flash as a pinball theme has appeared in online pinball communities, with enthusiasts noting that it would fit well within the superhero genre that has proven successful in pinball design. Community members have suggested that The Flash could offer an alternative to Marvel-themed machines while staying within the popular superhero category. Some discussion has referenced the property's potential when comparing animation styles and playfield designs of other licensed pinball machines. The character's popularity through its television run was noted as making it a relevant choice for adaptation, though opinions varied on the show's appeal across different age demographics.
The Flash would offer distinctive gameplay possibilities centered on the theme of speed, with mechanical elements that could emphasize rapid ball movement, quick successive shots, and timed modes that challenge players to complete objectives before time expires. Visual themes could incorporate the character's iconic lightning bolt emblem, red and yellow color scheme, and the Speed Force's electrical energy effects through lighting and display animations. The franchise includes a robust rogues gallery of villains such as Reverse Flash, Captain Cold, and Gorilla Grodd that could serve as targets or mode objectives. Sound design could draw from the dramatic orchestral scores of the film and television adaptations, incorporating whooshing sound effects and electrical crackling to emphasize the sensation of super speed that defines the character.
