About This Theme
Young Frankenstein is a 1974 comedy film directed by Mel Brooks and starring Gene Wilder as Frederick Frankenstein, the grandson of the infamous mad scientist. Shot in black and white to evoke the classic Universal horror films of the 1930s, the movie parodies the Frankenstein franchise while serving as a loving homage to the original Universal monster movies. The film has achieved significant cultural significance since its release, earning widespread critical acclaim, an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay, and a place on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 funniest American films. Its memorable quotes, physical comedy, and musical number "Puttin' on the Ritz" have become embedded in popular culture, and the property has since been adapted into a successful Broadway musical.
Within the pinball community, Young Frankenstein appears regularly in discussions about potential licensed themes, with 71 recorded mentions placing it at a moderate level of fan interest. The property has been included in wish lists alongside other classic horror and comedy titles, particularly in conversations about horror-themed pinball releases. Community members have expressed enthusiasm for the franchise's potential as a pinball theme, with some discussions specifically noting its appeal as a classic monster property with strong comedic elements. While a previous pinball machine based on Mary Shelley's original Frankenstein was produced by Sega in the 1990s, Young Frankenstein's comedic approach would offer a distinctly different experience.
The property offers substantial opportunities for creative pinball design. Visually, the black and white aesthetic of the film could translate into striking playfield art with selective color accents, while iconic locations like the laboratory, the castle, and the theatrical stage provide natural playfield feature inspiration. Mechanical possibilities include a revolving bookcase mechanism, laboratory equipment toys, and castle tower elements. The film's famous musical sequences, particularly "Puttin' on the Ritz," provide excellent audio integration opportunities, while memorable dialogue from Gene Wilder, Marty Feldman as Igor, Cloris Leachman as Frau Blucher, and Peter Boyle as the Monster would enhance gameplay callouts. The comedic timing and physical gags inherent to the source material would translate well into pinball's emphasis on entertaining, repeatable gameplay experiences.
