About

Retro Pinball LLC was a pinball manufacturer based in York, Pennsylvania, formed in March 2007 by four partners: Herb Silvers, Gene Goodman, Reinhard Bangerter, and Mike Patz. Silvers, who restored and resold electromechanical machines, found that Gottlieb's 1967 King of Diamonds was the best-selling game in his shop, and began developing an electronic remake with Bangerter, using parts sourced from Stern Pinball for early prototypes. In July 2007 the partners signed a licensing agreement with Gottlieb to reproduce the title, and that October the completed prototype was unveiled at the Chicago Pinball Expo.

Retro Pinball's King of Diamonds paired the original's backglass art, roto-target, and electromechanical score reels with a custom controller board, digital sound effects, and a hinged backbox. The release slipped several years past its original target before machines finally began shipping in 2010, with a planned cap of 100 units and a numbered plaque on the first batch. King of Diamonds remained Retro Pinball's only release.
