Homebrew Showcase: Dark Chaos (Apophis 2025)
Summary
Dark Chaos homebrew machine showcased pre-Golden State Pinball Festival appearance.
Mystery Pinball Theater 3000 showcases Dark Chaos, a homebrew pinball game created by Apous with contributions from Unsavory and Flux. The host plays the physical machine ahead of its appearance at Golden State Pinball Festival in three weeks, praising its game design complexity, decision-making depth, and comparison to Williams classics with additional mechanical depth. The session features extended gameplay commentary highlighting rules mechanics like cluster bombs, nukes, moon missiles, and wave-based combat systems.
Dark Chaos is an original homebrew design by Dan Massie, a.k.a. Apophis who is also a member of the Virtual Pinball Workshop. The game is incredible, combining an intense game loop with managable rules and terrific sound. This game will be featured in its physical form at the Golden State Pinball Festival 2026 in the homebrew section. I want to get good at the virtual version so I can compare with my actual play on the physical machine so this is my practice session. Not bad for a human!
