The podcasters, streamers, YouTubers, and community builders making pinball great, and what they're publishing this week.
In 2021, Stern Pinball was riding pinball's modern golden age—and they handed one of the hottest licenses on the planet to a legend. Brian Eddy, the designer behind Attack from Mars and Medieval Madness, had walked away from pinball for nearly 20 years. The Mandalorian was only his second machine since coming back. In this episode of The Skill Shot, we step up to the most perfectly-timed Star Wars pin ever made: Stern's The Mandalorian. If you love the new-Stern launch streams on Dead Flip, the reviews and hot takes on Kaneda's Pinball Podcast, or the gameplay and tournament coverage on channels like Buffalo Pinball and This Week in Pinball, this deep dive into modern Stern history is right up your alley. We break down how this machine landed at the absolute peak of Baby Yoda mania, why Carl Weathers' original callouts as Greef Karga became some of his final recorded work, and how Ludwig Göransson's Emmy-winning theme turns the cabinet speakers into a goosebump machine. Then we walk the playfield to analyze one of the deeper modern Stern rulesets. The Mandalorian is built around story-driven missions, spending Beskar at the Foundry, and the rotating encounter mini-playfield on the Premium and LE—a second upper deck with its own flippers that physically tilts while you fight to keep the ball alive. I step up to the flippers to share the shot geometry, the edition differences (Pro vs. Premium vs. LE), and the road to the "This Is the Way" wizard mode. Finally, we run The Mandalorian through the FlipScore—my 100-point rubric checking Shots, Code/Depth, Theme, Build Quality, and Resale Value—to see if this 2021 blockbuster deserves a prime spot in your game room today.

We have always been happy to provide an open, friction-free public API for any developers that want to use it. This has encouraged a diverse group of people to make interesting uses of the data: Students simply wanting to learn how to use an API; analytics-minded folks who like to explore the data in interesting ways; businesses that want to easily list their line-up on their website; folks like Matchplay that use it to quickly import machine line-ups for a tournament. These uses align with the intention of the API: to make the data available so others can make interesting things. Most of the time, people approach us with their plan and we work together to find a good solution. There have always been people here and there who grabbed the data (often very inefficiently) and made a “where to find pinball” site with it - basically cloning our core functionality, and sometimes with no attribution. Lately, though, with the barrier to entry so low, basically everyone who is working on a pinball app/website of any sort is slapping on a pinball map. Making a pinball rules app? An operator maintenance app? It appears that whatever you’re doing, your LLM is going to suggest “now let’s help people find where to play.” After spending a couple hours completely hallucinating API endpoints, they settle on something like, “query the Pinball Map API and load 6,000 locations every time someone visits the site, and then poll these 98 other endpoints once an hour” (or something equally bad). Every week there are about two of these new apps popping up. It can be a lot to deal with for a hobby project like ours, and we don’t have a ton of time and patience for it. Our goals are always to provide you with a fast, reliable, and easy to use and update map.
