About
Inder — full name Industria Electromecánica de Recreativos S.A. — was a Spanish pinball manufacturer based in Madrid. Founder José "Pepe" Martín Martínez had designed pinballs at another Madrid company, FAER, before leaving in 1965 to start Inder on his own. The company's first pinball machines followed by 1970, starting with Miss Universo, and under longtime director Francisco Mestre it built a wide catalog of machines through the 1970s and 1980s alongside Spanish rivals like Playmatic and Recel.
Inder's catalog moved from electromechanical machines like Seven Winner (1973) and Super Bowling (1974) to solid-state titles such as Topaz (1979) and Skateboard (1980). The company then released no new pinball machines between 1980 and 1985, building licensed video games like Cosmic Alien and Space Panic instead during Spain's early-1980s arcade boom, before returning to pinball with Brave Team in 1985. Canasta 86 followed the next year and became one of Inder's best-remembered titles — a basketball game later reinterpreted twice, as MarsaPlay's New Canasta in 2010 and Quetzal Pinball's Super Canasta in 2019. In 1990, Inder fitted a CRT monitor into the backbox of Flip-VI, blending video-game elements into pinball play.
Spain's pinball market contracted through the early 1990s, and Inder's output slowed with it. Bushido, released in 1993, was the first Spanish pinball with a dot-matrix display and was marketed with the line "American pinball? No, it's Inder!" It was the company's last release; Inder closed later that year.
