About
Allied Leisure Industries was incorporated in November 1968 in Hialeah, Florida, by Ron Haliburton and David Braun. The pair had originally planned to design game prototypes for established manufacturers, but after getting poor terms for their work, they started building and selling machines themselves. Early products were novelty amusements rather than pinball: a claw-crane game called Monkey Bizz, followed in late 1968 by the word game Unscramble.
Allied entered pinball in 1972 with Sea Hunt and Spooksville, a pair of upright "shakerball" machines built around a free-floating playfield mounted to two handles. Shaking the cabinet moved the playfield itself, letting players rattle the machine without triggering a tilt. In September 1975 the company released Rock On, a four-player machine that ranks among the first solid-state pinball machines sold commercially. Allied reused the same design that year as the two-player Dyn-O-Mite. The company also built cocktail-table pinball machines for bar and lounge locations, including Take Five in 1978.
Allied lost money in five of the six years leading up to 1979, when it was acquired by Brighton Products, a company tied to Milton Koffman's investment group. On July 29, 1980, the company's board voted to rename it Centuri. New leadership, including former Taito America executives Ed Miller and Bill Olliges, halted pinball production and shifted the business toward distributing licensed Japanese arcade video games.
