About This Theme
Back to the Future is a science fiction film franchise that began with the 1985 movie directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly and Christopher Lloyd as Doc Brown. The original film follows teenager Marty as he accidentally travels back to 1955 in a time machine built from a DeLorean DMC-12 by eccentric scientist Doc Brown, where he must ensure his parents fall in love to secure his own existence before returning to 1985. The franchise expanded to include two sequels in 1989 and 1990, an animated series, video games, and various merchandise. Back to the Future has maintained significant cultural relevance for nearly four decades, with the DeLorean time machine, the flux capacitor, and phrases like "Great Scott" and "1.21 gigawatts" becoming iconic elements of popular culture. The films are widely regarded as classics of the science fiction and adventure genres, combining humor, heart, and imaginative storytelling.
Within the pinball community, Back to the Future has generated substantial interest as a potential pinball machine theme, coming up frequently across enthusiast forums and discussions. Community members frequently reference BTTF when speculating about future releases, often grouping it with other highly desired licensed properties. The ongoing conversation reflects both the enduring popularity of the franchise and pinball fans' recognition that the property hasn't had a pinball machine since Data East's 1990 game, despite its strong fit for the medium. Discussions indicate that fans view Back to the Future as one of the most anticipated potential licenses in pinball, though questions about manufacturing capacity and licensing arrangements remain topics of debate within the community.
A Back to the Future pinball machine would offer numerous compelling design opportunities that align well with pinball mechanics and aesthetics. The DeLorean time machine itself provides an instantly recognizable centerpiece toy that could feature lighting effects mimicking the film's iconic time travel sequences, while the flux capacitor's distinctive Y-shaped design offers natural integration as a playfield feature or backbox element. Gameplay could incorporate time travel mechanics through multiple playfield levels or modes representing different time periods from the films, including 1955, 1985, 2015, and 1885. The franchise's memorable musical score by Alan Silvestri, particularly the main theme and "The Power of Love" by Huey Lewis and the News, would provide instantly recognizable audio cues, while sound clips from the films offer abundant callout opportunities. Visual elements such as the clock tower, the lightning strike, the hoverboard, and various period-specific details from each era would create a rich thematic environment. The trilogy's emphasis on cause and effect, racing against time, and achieving precise objectives translates naturally to pinball's shot-making and mission-based gameplay structures.
