Summary

Dutch Pinball Museum seminar at Pinball Expo 2026 on preserving pinball oral histories, with veteran interview anecdotes.

A Pinball Expo 2026 seminar from the Dutch Pinball Museum (Rotterdam) presents the museum's philosophy on storytelling and includes five-minute oral-history interviews with veteran pinball people. Gerard (museum founder) and Misha (education/photography) describe eight criteria for a good museum and share anecdotes from Elizabeth Gieske, Chris Granner, Jim Patla, and Larry DeMar about Williams, Valley, Bally, and the industry's early days.

From the creator

What happens to the stories behind pinball when nobody writes them down? At Pinball Expo 2026 in Chicago, Mischa de Muynck and Gerard van de Sanden of the Dutch Pinball Museum talked about why the stories matter just as much as the machines, and how we tell them in our museum in Rotterdam. Some of them have a distinctly European flavour. And then we let three legends tell their own stories, live on stage: Chris Granner on how pinball saved his life. Jim Patla on Sam Stern, the competitor who volunteered to come and work for a whole year. Larry DeMar on a radio he is still a little embarrassed about. Stories like these disappear when they’re not recorded. That’s exactly why we do this. Thanks to Chris, Jim and Larry for sharing, and to Pinball Expo for having us. Do you have a pinball story that deserves to be preserved? Tell us in the comments.
