Pinball Magazine & Pinball News PINcast June 2022 recap
June might be over, but there was plenty of exciting news from the pinball world last month to relive in the latest edition of the Pinball Magazine and Pinball News Pinball Industry News PINcast....
Highlights
- Toy Story 4 was originally intended to be for the first three Toy Story movies, but the license was eventually renegotiated to be specifically for Toy Story 4.
- The original Toy Story design was delayed and modified into Willy Wonka before being replaced with the current Pat Lawlor Toy Story 4 design.
- Toy Story 4 generated $30 million in orders on the first day of announcement (June 14, 2022).
- All 1,000 Toy Story 4 Collector's Edition machines sold out almost immediately upon announcement.
- Jersey Jack had pre-produced approximately 400 Toy Story 4 Limited Edition units ready to ship at announcement, with machines appearing in locations the same day or next day.
- Escape from the Megaverse is a Stern game made for Replay Labs in Tampa, Florida, featuring a Bored Ape Yacht Club theme.
- Escape from the Megaverse uses the same playfield layout as Spider-Man Home Edition, Star Wars Pin Model Supreme, Heavy Metal, and appears to be the fifth iteration of that layout.
- Toy Story 4 uses audio by Unlock Audio (a video game audio company), not by David Thiel or Chris Granham.
- Toy Story 4 Collector's Edition includes additional Bo Peep character call-outs not available in the Limited Edition.
- Toy Story 4 version 1.04 released without WiFi update capability; WiFi updates were added in version 1.05 via a firmware update.
Notable quotes
“there is only a collector's edition, which will be limited to 1,000 machines, and there is a limited edition, which is limited to 5,000 machines. So there is no standard edition at all”
“$15,000 for the 1,000 collectors of edition machines...and $12,000 [for limited edition]”
“if they would make or build 50 games a week, that's 100 weeks of orders if all sold. So that's basically two years”
“Toy Story 4 is a success as well...with $30 million worth of sales on day one”
“the audio company...the main theme is mostly playing all the time and the sound effect sounds like a slot machine”
“it appears to be a prototype to generate interest and see how many people would be interested in buying such a game, which sort of is similar to the heavy metal game, where you're basically testing the water”
“if it is to become available, it's not going to be cheap”
“it's a pain to navigate around the screen...it would be much better if you could just plug a keyboard in to be honest”
“once I put it in, it seemed to connect fine...it's been a nice feature, I think, for the weekend”
“it's an interesting development to see that Stern is actually trying to get back into bowling alleys”
