Designed during Nintendo's early arcade era, the game challenged players to outdraw an outlaw in a classic Old West showdown using a light gun and a projected movie screen. For decades, the original Wild Gunman machines were considered some of the rarest and most elusive pieces of Nintendo history. Very few cabinets survived, and much of the original film footage was believed lost. That changed thanks to an ambitious restoration and preservation effort completed in 2026. Using surviving film reels, digitized footage, custom electronics, modern projection technology, and extensive research into the original hardware, arcade restorer Callan Brown (74XX Arcade Repair) recreated the experience of Nintendo's groundbreaking 1974 machine. The project has allowed modern audiences to experience a game that had effectively disappeared for over 50 years.
