Metallica, formed in 1981 by drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist/vocalist James Hetfield, is one of the most successful and influential heavy metal bands in history. The band, originally from Los Angeles and later based in San Francisco, played a crucial role in the development of thrash metal, a subgenre known for its fast tempos, complex guitar riffs, and intense aggression. Metallica's early albums, such as Kill 'Em All (1983) and Ride the Lightning (1984), laid the groundwork for their signature sound, combining raw energy with sophisticated musical structures.

Their 1986 album, Master of Puppets, is widely regarded as one of the greatest metal albums of all time, featuring tracks like "Battery," "Welcome Home (Sanitarium)," and the epic title track. The tragic death of bassist Cliff Burton later that year marked a turning point for the band, but they continued to rise, achieving mainstream success with ...And Justice for All (1988) and especially with Metallica (1991), commonly known as The Black Album. This record, featuring hits like "Enter Sandman" and "The Unforgiven," catapulted Metallica to global superstardom.
