Rich Babich recounts 50 years building Colorado Game Exchange into a major pinball distributor by focusing on niche markets and community relationships.
This RePlay Magazine Podcast episode just might be from the most exotic location we’ll ever have as Randy Chilton visits with Game Exchange of Colorado’s Rich Babich, who was docked in Bora Bora at the time of the chat. Rich and his wife of 50 years, Bev, were celebrating last year’s golden anniversary with a 4-and-a-half-month cruise, seeing the world. On the business side, Rich has sure seen the world of coin-op change over his almost five decades in the industry, which started on the operations side. Today, his distributorship sells just about as many games to the industry as he does to the home enthusiast. (The retail side of things has been built up by his son JJ.) And did you know that back in the 1980s, Rich was also a manufacturer for a bit? He teamed up with an engineer to develop Hot Seat, which he said was the first dual-axle motion simulator. There is much to this conversation from his early days in the industry, working with family, the importance for our industry to give back to the children and families who play our games and more. Give it a listen!
Kaneda critiques Pinside's scalping fees as virtue signaling; argues manufacturers should sell direct to end scalping.

When Pinballs Began to Think – The Birth of Solid State Pinball (CaptNRetro Documentary Series – Episode 0) Pinball didn’t evolve into solid state — it was forced there. In this pilot episode of When Pinballs Began to Think, we trace the messy, uncomfortable transition from electromechanical pinball to early solid-state designs in the mid-to-late 1970s — and why that awkward era quietly saved the industry. Why operators, not players, pushed pinball toward solid state How Bally tested the waters with true EM/SS bridge games Why Evel Knievel (1977) became the moment solid state earned real trust How Gottlieb resisted change and paid for it Why Williams waited in the shadows before eventually dominating And why Playboy (1978) marked the point of no return Most importantly, we explain why early solid-state games — especially Bally machines — are still some of the best pinball machines ever made to learn repair, restoration, and real-world servicing on. Simple rules. Honest layouts. Clear cause and effect. If you can understand these games, you can fix almost anything. This is the first episode in a long-form documentary series diving deep into pinball history — told from the perspective of someone who actually works on these machines.
Can we get serious for a second? Like seriously! Let's talk the wackiness of Gottlieb System 3.
